Title: Beyond Benzodiazepines: Evaluating the Role of Phenobarbital for Resistant Alcohol Withdrawal

Pharmacist Objectives:

  1. Outline the pathophysiology and clinical features of resistant alcohol withdrawal.
  2. Compare the mechanisms, pharmacokinetics, safety profile, and dosing of benzodiazepines and phenobarbital.
  3. Assess primary literature to evaluate the appropriateness of phenobarbital as an agent for resistant alcohol withdrawal treatment.
  4. Design a potential treatment plan for resistant alcohol withdrawal utilizing phenobarbital.

Pharmacy Technician Objectives:

  1. Recognize common doses and formulations for the treatment of alcohol withdrawal.
  2. Identify alternative benzodiazepines in the event of a drug shortage.
  3. Compare phenobarbital with benzodiazepines for resistant alcohol withdrawal.
